1. One hundred years ago today Fr. Frank Browne SJ left the Titanic at Queenstown. The telegram sent by the Irish Provincial Fr. William Delany SJ in response to Fr. Browne’s request to go to New York was unequivocal: ‘GET OFF THAT SHIP - PROVINCIAL’. Fr. Browne later described the event as “the only time holy obedience saved a man’s life.”

    Although suffering from a dose of Titanicitis (fatigue induced by too many Titanic stories), three more school talks are planned for next week on Fr. Browne & the Titanic. One of the most interesting concepts that I have come across is a graphic novel by Alan Dunne (Twitter @AlanDunneDOTie ) entitled Get Off That Ship which ‘sets out to chronicle the true story of Frank Browne, a Jesuit novice and photographer who travelled from Southampton to Queenstown on the ill-fated Titanic.’ The first chapter is out now and well worth a read.

Over the next four weeks, a talk by the Assistant Archivist of the Irish Jesuit Archives, will be offered to schools where Frank Browne was educated: Bower Convent, Athlone; Belvedere College, Dublin; Christian Brothers College, Cork and Castleknock College, Dublin. The topic - Fr. Frank Browne SJ and the Titanic.
